Training

Dr Broadhead graduated in medicine from the University of New South Wales in 2006 and completed his training in orthopaedic surgery at hospitals in Australia and the United States, becoming a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) and a Fellow of the Australian Orthopaedic Association (FAOrthA).

He then completed subspecialty fellowships in lower limb reconstruction at the Prince of Wales and Sydney Children’s Hospitals, and gained further experience in revision joint replacement, limb salvage and bone and soft tissue tumour surgery with the RPA Bone & Soft Tissue Sarcoma Unit. He has held honorary posts at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham, and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore, in the United Kingdom.

He performs total hip replacement through both direct anterior and posterior approaches, and total knee replacement with an emphasis on early recovery after surgery (ERAS), with further training in robotic-assisted knee replacement.

Research and teaching

Dr Broadhead was awarded a Master of Surgery (ChM) by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh for research on ACL reconstruction techniques, and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) by the University of Melbourne for studies on bone biology and orthopaedic oncology, supported by a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) scholarship. He is a Conjoint Senior Lecturer at the University of New South Wales, has been lead author on numerous peer-reviewed journal articles, and presents his research internationally.

Approach

The practice is dedicated to providing patients with a high standard of care, through an evidence-based approach and with all conservative options considered before surgery. Patients of all ages are treated, from children with developmental disorders of the hip or knee, to young adults needing reconstruction after injury, to older patients with painful arthritis who may be suitable for joint replacement.
